When someone takes up residency in a new home they set about adding their own touch to their home. It might be as simple as a coat of paint or new curtains, but it could also be as major as renovation work like a new kitchen or bathroom. So they leave their imprint on the home. The same should be apparent when the Holy Spirit takes up residency in our lives. There should be a visible imprint of the renovations that have taken place. We all talk about the Holy Spirit and we know that He is the third member of the triune God. We also know that He has a role to play in each of our lives. Scripture also teaches us that the Holy Spirit indwells or takes up residency in our lives.
[Jesus says] “Nevertheless I tell you the truth it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.”
John 16: 7
You however are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit lives in you.
Romans 8:9
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you…
Romans 8:11a
The above verses clearly state that the Holy Spirit dwells in us – God’s people.
What Does That Occupancy Reveal?
Over recent months at church we have had various messages regarding knowing God through the fruit of the Spirit. I have become very aware of the critical role that the Holy Spirit has in this. If I continue to use the theme of a dwelling, there are things that can hinder or restrict the occupier from making the changes they would like. It could be finances, council bylaws or disagreement over what needs to change.
The same can be said about us. I believe we can inhibit or restrict what the Holy Spirit wants to do in our lives. We can hold onto what we feel is safe and therefore hinder or restrict what the He wants to do in our lives.
Drought
In Tasmania we have experienced a very dry period; so much so, I can drive anywhere on my farm, when normally I would bog if not careful. King Island has had the driest period on record which has forced farmers to sell livestock and buy in feed if they can get it.
As water is the agent for change in drought conditions by creating growth and new life, so the Holy Spirit is the agent for change in a believers dry and dusty soul.
Buried Fruit
When we talk about the fruit of the spirit many of us have learnt Galatians 5:22-23 and can recite the fruit off by heart:- love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control – which is great … but there are several other verses in this chapter that need highlighting because without them, the fruits may very well stay buried in our soul.
But I say walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Gal. 5:16
What is this scripture saying? To me it’s saying stay connected, walk with me not ahead not behind but, with me and I will keep you on track.
If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
Gal. 5:25
Here we have two scriptures that bookend the desires of the flesh and the fruits of the Spirit. Are they important? Yes! because without keeping close in our relationship with Jesus we are destined to fail. The fruit will wither on the vine so to speak.
And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Gal. 5:24
When I think of the word ‘crucified’, the picture that comes to mind for me is our Saviour’s body hanging lifeless on the cross after surrendering everything for us. So what is Paul saying here to the Galatian church and to us today?
I think that he would be saying, if we have stuff in our lives that is influencing us and our relationship with Christ in a negative way, deal with it.
The Holy Spirit is like part of a believer’s DNA. He is not pushy or a bully but quite the opposite; He is gentle and patient and will not change anything without our consent. This is where we move from passive to pro-active.
Implementing Change
This year has been a year of change in my life. I feel as though God has brought me out of an extended period of spiritual drought and has moved me into a place where I have spiritually never been. I have gained a renewed sensitivity to His word noticing things previously overlooked.
I have also become very aware of the Holy Spirit’s role in my life and the need to listen. He doesn’t shout from the roof top or send down a lightning bolt but He just brings to mind in an ever subtle way, perhaps a scripture, perhaps a word or perhaps even a persons name.
The other thing that has brought change is prayer. Over recent months I have been a regular part of a small prayer group praying for a new Pastor. The side affect of that has been the sense of a need to surrender our lives afresh to God which has made each of us to become vulnerable to whatever God wants to do in our lives.
Want to know God more?
1. Look deeper into his word.
2. Listen to the whisper of the Holy Spirit and act on it.
3. Pray, seek all that God has for you.
4. Surrender, let go of everything and offer yourself up to Him.
God bless you.
Elder,
Geoff.

Thank you Geoff, your words are wonderfully encouraging.
All too often it is so easy to leave the Holy Spirit in the background & not to listen for His gentle voice or to ignore Him when we do hear Him. We are so incredibly blessed that God never gives up on us.
Thank you Geoff. Much to think about in that Holy Spirit inspired message. It is part of knowing God and developing our relationship with him. For me it is stage by stage as The Holy Spirit reveals the depth of my learning curve. I’m so greatful he is patient with me!!
