What
does it mean to be 'Australian'? Meet an American and
they can describe with pride the heritage and values
of their country. An Englishman speaks with pride of
his country's long history and global influence. A Frenchmen
speaks passionately about his nation and all its sophistication
Germans speaks with world acknowledged precision, reflected
in their international reputation as masters of fine
engineering. But what does it means to be Australian.
What do we have to be proud of? |
Most
Australians are taught about our introduction to war- Gallipoli.
It is a celebrated failure commemorated every April 25th,
ANZAC Day. But few Australians know about the amazing
and strategic victory wrought by Australian troops on
October 31st 1917 in the desert of Gaza at Beersheba.
For 4 days 60,000 British troops had tried to win Beersheba
from the Turks. Failure to capture Beersheba thus jeopardised
the likelihood of an Allied victory in World War I since
this was the only available source of water for men and
horses who had run out of water 2 days earlier. 800 Australian
Light Horsemen conducted the last known cavalry charge
in modern warfare history and did what 60,000 British
troops had failed to do. This miraculous victory ushered
in the end of World War I. This charge of the 4th Light
Horsemen epitomises what being Australian really means.
And it is by no means a unique demonstration of the ANZAC
spirit.

| Dr.
Andrew Corbett gives an overview of Australian history
using historic photographs, pictures, video clips, music
clips, maps, and historical documents. By understanding
that being Australian gives us a unique identity
which can be observed from the foundation and formation
of our nation, an objective basis is given for national
dignity. Dr. Corbett shows that there are observable
national values which have been shaped by our Christian
heritage that are evident particularly in Australians
when they are put under pressure with their backs to
the wall. |

By
understanding what is means to be Australian can
give young Australians the confidence that they can
face the future no matter how bleak it may seem now.
With up to 40 young Australian males committing suicide
every week because life just doesn't seem worth it,
this presentation challenges such hopelessness by showing
that Aussies have always risen above such challenges
especially when orientated with Christian outlook.
|
This presentation would make an ideal supplement to understanding
Australian history. It would also make a good introduction
to Australian culture and history for those seeking to
understand what makes Australians unique. |
|
This
presentation is promoting the Christian aspects of Australian
culture and history. Parts of the presentation are taken
from a live presentation at Legana Christian Church in Tasmania.
